8 Tactics to Spice Up Your Facebook Page or Risk Losing Customers

Forty-one percent of small businesses in the United States use Facebook.

That equates to more than 40 million small businesses on Facebook in total - an increase of 10 million businesses from last year. Thirty million of these Facebook pages are updated regularly.

The facts don’t lie: more and more businesses are joining Facebook and using it as a marketing tool. If your business isn’t one of these 40 million, my best advice is that you should create a Facebook page today or contact us so we can help you set it up right.

But this post isn’t for businesses without Facebook pages - it’s for the businesses with Facebook pages. With increasing competition, you have to make sure that your Facebook page stays relevant, interesting and engaging, or else you risk losing potential customers.

Here are some tactics and ideas to keep your business’s Facebook page fresh and intriguing:

1) Make use of custom Facebook tabs.

A Facebook page tab example is the About tab or Videos tab. A lot can be done with these if you have a web programmer or developer on staff, or if you contact a marketing firm like Bloominari. A must-have is a Welcome tab, which encourages new visitors to Like your page. Other helpful tabs include: Products or Services, Social Media, Contact Us, Email Sign Up, Coupons or a Seasonal Products or Services tab. You can basically think of tabs as pages on your website - be creative and develop tabs with information your followers are interested in.

2) Post videos.

Make videos, whether you are just using your iPhone or whether you have a professional videographer. Videos are becoming more popular on social media, which means videos are becoming more valuable for businesses to create.

3) Ask questions.

The best way to encourage a conversation with your followers is to ask them a question. Depending on the casualness of your business and audience, you can ask them questions ranging from “What are your plans for Halloween?” to “If you could repaint your bedroom, what color would you want it to be?” to “What is your favorite item you have purchased from our store?” When people comment on the post, reply to their comments with a personal message to give your company a friendly and likeable persona.

4) Host giveaways, contests or polls.

Different from the above suggestion but still similar, ask your audience for information or for them to share your business’s social media urls as an entry to a contest or giveaway. Make sure to schedule these regularly to increase customer engagement and to keep your followers coming back to your website or Facebook page for future contests (for example, hold a giveaway the first Wednesday of every month). Facebook has rules about giveaways and contests, so be sure to educate yourself or if you have a social media agency managing your social media accounts, share your giveaway, contest or poll ideas with the agency.

5) Freshen up the photo albums.

Take a look at your business’s Facebook page’s photo albums and make sure the pictures are still relevant and up-to-date. If you could add a new photo album approximately each month, or add new pictures every week, that would be ideal. Make sure that the photo album titles make sense and the pictures are organized appropriately. Remember: everyone loves to look at pictures, especially on Facebook, so your pictures ARE being viewed!

6) Post content worth sharing.

Have your in-house marketing or graphic design person (or your marketing agency) create an infographic to share on social media. If there is a hot new study about your industry, post a link to it. The more interesting, unique or relevant your content, the more likely you will have followers who will share your content. This means that your post will appear on the follower’s Facebook page and their friends are likely to see it, and then go to your business Facebook page. That is how you get more Facebook Likes and that is the goal.

7) Find your audience’s interests.

This is a “social media 101” tactic, but business owners often forget to do this. Your followers have a wide variety of interests - their entire world does not revolve around your business. If you’re not sure what their interests are, then just ask in a post! If you have a small business that offers very specified products or services, then it’s easier to figure out their interests. For example, if you own a book store, it’s safe to post about who recently won the Nobel Prize for literature or a controversial book at the top of the New York Times’ Best Sellers list.

8) Post business news and updates that are otherwise secret.

Give your Facebook followers incentive to follow you on Facebook by sharing company news or other content that the public otherwise would not know. Hiring a new manager? Changing a vendor to expand your products? Have you just been scheduled to show up on a local morning news show? Getting your store’s bathroom renovated? Brag about it on Facebook and get your followers excited. Remember that whenever you can and as long as it’s applicable, include a link to your website to encourage website visits.

The top reason for an American to follow a company on Facebook is “to support the brand.” So use these tips to make your followers fall in love with your business, feel loyal to your business and get excited about your business.
